Fire Station Giveaway Winner and Free Books

We're very pleased to announce the winner of our "Fireplace" Firestation Giveaway, featuring the new docking station available for pre-order now from ReaderDock. Special thanks are due to everyone who gave us a glimpse of where they use their Fires and for everyone who participated in our contest. Of course, we can only have one winner, but stick around for more contests in the future, including a nice one we have planned for when our Facebook page reaches 25,000 fans!

Let's all offer our sincere congratulations to our lucky winner, John Mann! We've enjoyed all of his contributions to our discussions, but to show there's no favoritism we'd also like to display the result from the widget presenting his name. Although a few others were disqualified first, he entered, did what he said, and we'll be pleased to send him a Firestation once they are available. Congrats, John! And we hope the rest of you will come back for our next contest!

And we'd also like to extend a special thanks to all of our visitors for an excellent March. The Kindle Fire Department had roughly a quarter of a million views! Thanks for making us your destination for apps, books, and a great community of Fire users.

For those of you who weren't lucky enough to win (this time), we can still offer you a few free books!

The Living Image: Kindle Book of the Day 3/31

For those who love a fast-paced thriller that wastes no time jumping into the action, Pamela Richter's The Living Image is a very highly reviewed choice that incorporates humor, romance, and suspense to make it a fantastic read. When the CIA, KGB, and Yakusa all get involved to hunt down a powerful and brilliant (yet incredibly confused) clone, you know it's going to be an exciting race. Grab this one, and don't be surprised when you don't want to put it down!

Name: The Living Image
Rating: 4.3 stars over 10 reviews
Price: 2.99
Sabrina Miller, a fashion designer in Los Angeles, is stunned when she meets her own double. Her shock turns to terror when she learns that her duplicate was fabricated by a scientist and that there are people intent on killing her to protect their new secret creation. The CIA wants to study her. The Russians wants to abduct her for the technology. The Japanese don't care if they have to tear the woman to pieces--they want to know how she was made.

Sabrina flees with the woman, whom she names Eve, as the news about a potential new secret weapon for the Defense Department is leaked. An international race ensues to acquire the woman, a molecular clone of Sabrina's brain and body, but dramatically changed through advanced computer engineering.

Eve has been thrust into a new body and must learn to learn how to act like a normal human woman to evade those hunting her. To complicate matters she is suddenly receiving mature hormons which play havoc with her logical and biologically enhanced brain function.

Although Sabrina and Eve look alike, there are enormous differences the people hunting them will do anything to possess.

Reviews: "Take a sexy model, duplicate. Add in a nice old genius and two bumbling sons who somehow became lawyers. Stir in some spies and Japanese bad guys. You get amazing fun. Pamela Richter has created an exciting read that jumps from the starting gate. She has an incredible grasp of emotions, humor, and action."

Brixter: Free Kindle Fire App for 3/31

Title: Brixter
Rating: 3.0 stars over 22 reviews
Price: 0.00
Description: Brixter offers an original approach to the classic blocks-style puzzle genre. This game for your Android device is a compelling brain puzzle that stimulates thought and challenges your coordination skills.

When you start playing Brixter, you're given an assembly grid. In this grid, you'll assemble groups of blocks with the same color in tile-puzzle fashion. Once you've grouped three or more blocks, and at least one of them touches the top boundary of the grid, a new shape is activated.

You're not completely at the mercy of circumstance as you play, either. You can create your own shape and send it up to complete full rows as they accumulate on the upper area of the screen. After a short learning curve, you'll master the game functions and enjoy cruising through the levels. But don't worry, you'll definitely be challenged as the game progresses. And you can always set the difficulty level to match your skills (you'll find this in the options menu).

A Season of Eden - Romance
4.1 stars over 49 reviews

Description: He's my teacher. I shouldn't be alone with him. But I can't help that he's irresistible. I let the door silently close at my back. He stared at me, and a taut quiet stretched between us. "I like hearing you play," I said, moving toward him. He turned, in sync with my slow approach. He looked up at me but didn't say anything. I rested my clammy hand on the cold, slick body of the baby grand. "May I?" The muscles in his throat shifted, then he swallowed. "Eden." My knees weakened, like a soft tickling kiss had just been blown against the backs of them. "Is it okay?" I asked. His gaze held mine like two hands joined. He understood what I was really asking. "Let me stay," I said. "Please." "You're going to get me in trouble," he said.

No Good Deed: Kindle Book of the Day

The astounding success of the thriller No Good Deed and the Mark Taylor series from Bestselling author M.P. McDonald can easily be attributed to two things: skill and perseverance. Collecting fans one at a time until the book had more 5-star reviews than some other novels had words, it has snowballed all the way into the Amazon Top 100 on occasion. The story revolves around little glimpses of the future and quickly becomes so engrossing that the only thing you can picture in your future is reading this book!

Name: No Good Deed: Book One of the Mark Taylor Series
Rating: 4.4 stars over 130 reviews
Price: 2.99
Description: Mark Taylor discovers first hand that no good deed goes unpunished when the old camera he found during a freelance job in an Afghanistan bazaar gives him more than great photos. It triggers dreams of disasters. Tragedies that happen exactly as he envisions them. He learns that not only can he see the future, he can change it.

Then the unthinkable happened and everyone ignored his frantic warnings. Thousands die. Suddenly, the Feds are pounding on his door and the name they have for Taylor isn't urban hero. It's enemy combatant. And, it means they can do anything they want to him. Anything at all.

Reviews: "No Good Deed was the first one I read and I was not disappointed. This book had everything that I always look for in a book, well developed characters that were beleivable and made you care about what happened to them, a captivating story that had me glued to my kindle to the end, a little action, a little romance, and that paranormal element that often atracts me to a book. The only thing I was disappointed in was the length....I didn't want the book to end."

Kindle Fire Software Update 6.3 and Free Apps

In addition to the amazing Gold Box Deal of the Day for a $139 Kindle Fire, there is also a new software update for the Kindle Fire that adds some nice new features. This new version is 6.3 and you can check to see if it's been automatically installed on your device by following these steps: tap the Quick Settings icon, tap "More," then tap "Device." If your System Version is "Current version: 6.3," you are running the latest software. If you don't have it yet and want to manually install, you can download the update from here.

There is quite a long list of improvements that are listed, though they don't include some of the things we've most been hankering for, like text-to-speech or the ability to organize books in collections. But you do have the ability now to share passages from books, view information about the book from Shelfari (which is nice), and archive personal documents in the cloud for extra storage. There's a new format for reading within the Silk Browser, some adjustments have been made for viewing textbooks, and movie rentals now start as soon as you begin watching the video rather than when it begins download. To read more about these features, check out the full description here.

Nameless Dwarf Omnibus: Kindle Book of the Day 3/29

I can say with no hyperbole that D.P. Prior is one of the most promising fantasy writers emerging on the scene today. Featuring a style that's intelligent yet accessible, imaginative yet concrete, the books in his Chronicles of the Nameless Dwarf series are a must for anyone hoping to get a sense of what's next in the fantasy genre. All of the books are highly rated and backed by respected reviewers, meaning this should more than tide you over until the next season of Game of Thrones starts. These 3 books at 2.99 is an absolute steal!

Name: The Nameless Dwarf Omnibus (Chronicles of the Nameless Dwarf)
Rating: 5.0 stars over 2 reviews (but dozens more for the individual books)
Price: 2.99
Description: Following the massacre of the dwarves in their ravine city, the Nameless Dwarf pursues the survivors to the brigand town of Malfen, where he learns they have crossed the mountains into the lands of nightmare. His only intention is to save his people from extinction, but he's the last person they'd want to find them.

In book 1, The Nameless Dwarf follows the trail of the last of his race to the mountains bordering Qlippoth, a wasteland born from the dreams of a craven god.

But the survival of the dwarves depends on his willingness to confront the bloody deeds of his past, and the ruler of the brigand town of Malfen, who guards the pass into Qlippoth—an aberration known as the Ant-Man.

Reviews: "All three tales in the Nameless series are superbly written and bring a uniqueness to the epic fantasy genre which seems all too rare these days. Each character has a very distinctive style which continues to develop and evolve with the storyline as they're forced to confront the challenges of the present as well as face those of their past. The writing is top notch and the pacing of each story is near perfect. The Chronicles of the Nameless Dwarf has quickly become my favorite new fantasy series. Although they're quick reads they never disappoint and leave me eagerly awaiting the author's next release of Nameless, his companions and their adventures in the lands of Malkuth, Qlippoth and beyond. Well done."
