Tips & Tricks: Using the Fire While Charging, Book Notes, and Adjusting Screen Timeout

Continuing our theme this week of looking at some of the basic functions of the Kindle Fire, we'll spend a little time today looking at some of the tools available to you while you're reading for things like looking up words in the dictionary and taking notes. After that, we'll dive into the settings a bit more and tell you how to control the time it takes for the screen to dim while inactive.

But first, we got a very cool tip from on of our readers about a great way to make better use of the Fire while it's charging. I don't know about you, but for me I rarely use the Fire while it's charging because of the cord and everything, making the device so cumbersome, but Billy Crow found a great solution that makes reading or watching videos while charging a much better experience. Considering the Fire can use cell phone chargers, he found that some other accessories work as well, name the Micro USB SKN6258 Adapter.
In Billy's own words, "I got my part in today to make the Fire a little easier to use while it's charging. All this is, is a connector with an elbow (or L). You don't have the usb cable coming straight out of the bottom of the fire causing pressure on the connection. I can rest it on my stomach and read the Fire while its charging. I've tried it out today and it works great."

And it's very nice to see that the Micro USB SKN6258 Adapter only costs about $4.00.

Also worth mentioning is that there's an extra loooong 6 feet USB Data Sync cable for the Fire that's an astounding 70% off! It's the CCM®, 6 Foot Long USB to Micro-USB Cable.
Kindle Fire Reading Tools
There are a number of helpful functions at your disposal while you're reading, should you come across a word you don't know or something that you want to remember. Perhaps the easiest one is to use the magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen to search your document for a specific word. I'll often use this when I'm trying to find a specific section, but I'm not sure where the location of it is. Remembering an usual word or two that was there makes it easy to search for a passage.

A function that's a little less obvious is the ability to highlight sections and take notes. When you find something in the text that you want to take note of, touch your finger to the beginning of the phrase, line, or paragraph and drag it to the end of the section you want to mark. Lift your finger, and you'll see an options menu that'll allow you to Highlight or Take Notes. Highlighting just one word in this way will also call up the dictionary definition, which is handy and quick.

Setting the Screen Timeout
The time it takes for your Fire to activate the screensaver is fully adjustable, giving you the option of having it come on after as little as 30 seconds of inactivity, as much as an hour, or for it to never come on. The default is 5 minutes, I believe, but if you're a serious energy-saver or are having issues with the screensaver coming on while you're using applications or something, you may want to change it. Here's how.

First, tap Settings in the upper right hand corner, and then tap More to bring up the expanded settings menu. Tap Display and then Screen Timeout to see the various options you have: 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15, 30, 45, 1 hour, or never. Make your selection, and voila!

Initiation: Today's Kindle Book of the Day 1/31

After featuring her book Portal last week, we're very pleased to be showing off Imogen Rose's latest release today. If Portal and Initiation were twin sisters, Initiation would be the rebellious one that gets all of the attention. With an astoundingly perfect rating over 16 reviews and a recommendation for readers age 16 and older, this book presents a startling depiction of school life in a paranormal world that fans of books like Divergent will find themselves unable to escape from. Pick up the book, take a deep breath, and dive in!

Name: INITIATION (Bonfire Academy Book One)
Rating: 5.0 stars over 16 reviews
Price: 3.99
Description: Welcome to Bonfire Academy!

Set in the foothills of the alpine mountains in St.Moritz, this exclusive private school caters to a special kind of student. Enter at your own risk... but if you are human, you may not want to enter at all.

Reviews: "From the very first chapter, no, scratch that, from the very first page I was hooked! The minute I sat down I read nonstop until about two hundred and seventy pages when I fell asleep, exhausted. The very next morning I picked it back up and started reading until I finished the book.

I love Cordelia and Jagger. I love the idea of them and the relationship that they have. However, if you read the first chapter, you know that Cordelia is taken by Quinn. Right of the bat there's a love triangle, and we all know how me we love and loathe love triangles. However, I must admit, because this is a school for the paranormal, this love triangle was very interesting and frustrating all at the same time. "

Tips & Tricks: Screen Locking, Closing All Tabs, and Clearing Browser History

Last week when we asked people what they used the Fire for and what they wanted from our site, we got some interesting results in the poll and suggestions from the comments. The clear favorite for what people wanted and what people got from the Kindle Fire Department was information about their device in the articles we present each day. As a result, we'll be looking for ways to bring you more of that.

We also got a very insightful comment about the technical level of our articles. It's obviously a little difficult to always avoid topics that will be too tough for some people, but as we do strive to reach the widest possible base of Fire users, there should definitely be plenty of material that's accessible to everyone.

In that spirit, our Tips & Tricks article today will be sort of a Back to Basics lesson for those familiar with the Fire. These functions may be ones you've overlooked, of if you're new to the Fire they may be perfect to help get you familiar with your device. All in all, we hope to offer something useful to everyone with a Fire in our articles.

Locking the Screen Orientation
Considering the Fire is such a portable device, it's easy to imagine yourself in a situation where you need to stop the screen from changing from portrait to landscape view or vice-versa because of where you are or what you're doing. Setting the device flat on a surface can cause it to shift too. But there's no need to worry about twisting your wrist a bit and making the screen change if you Lock it in the Quick Settings.

All you have to do is tap the gear in the top right corner to make the Quick Settings menu appear at the top of the screen. On the far left, you'll find where it says Unlocked with an arrow around it. Tap that to toggle back and forth. Illustrations:

Closing All Tabs on Silk Browser
We've been hearing lately about an unfortunate problem people have been having with too many tabs opening when you start-up the Silk Browser. Although there is not way yet to completely prevent this, there are some ways to manage it. An important thing to remember is that tabs aren't automatically closed when you exit the browser, so you should close them yourself before you exit. That may or may not solve the problem, but even if you do open the browser and see a bunch of tabs jump out at you, this little tip should help you close them all and save you the time of individually closing every single one.

Instead of just tapping the X to close a tab and letting go, tab and hold the X until a pop-up menu appears with the option to close all tabs.

Clearing Browser Cache and History
Another possible solution to the Surprise Tabs Problem is to clear the browser cache and history. And there are other practical reasons why you may want to do this from time to time as well, the same with the browser on your laptop or PC.

After opening up a new web browser, head down to the bottom and tap the menu button, which will bring up a bar with options. Tap settings, and you'll be brought to a screen where you can configure your preferences for Saved Data. Right in the middle are the options for Clear cache and Clear history. Tap them, confirm, and then they'll be gone.

Stay tuned for more great apps this afternoon!

Accomplished in Murder: Today's Book of the Day 1/30

Today's book of the day comes to us from historical mystery author Dara England. If you haven't read a historical mystery before, this is a perfect opportunity to try one. It takes all the sophistication, courtliness, and manners, and mixes it with scheming plots, backstabbing, and cutthroat criminal behavior! I'd like to see Sherlock Holmes try and deal with this one. Find out where all the twists lead now for less than a buck!

Name: Accomplished in Murder
Rating: 4.0 stars over 23 reviews
Price: 0.99
Description: Murder was never so refined…

When her holiday on the coast of Cornwall takes a deadly turn, it is up to Drucilla Winterbourne to uncover the dangerous secrets the inhabitants of Blackridge House will do anything to conceal. But can a proper young lady from London society comprehend the dark motives of a killer?

Accomplished In Murder is the first in a series of historical mystery novelettes featuring intrepid Victorian heroines up to their bustles in crime. These works are only loosely connected and can be read in any order.

Reviews: "If you're looking for a quick, entertaining mystery with lots of historical flare, this is the story for you! Great world building makes you believe you're in the wilds of Victorian Cornwall, while deftly done characterization brings the heroine and her companions to life. Nor is the mystery lacking! Ms. England keeps you guessing as to the villain's identity right up to the final revelation."

Article Recap for January Week 4 and Free Apps

We're recapping another great week here at the Kindle Fire Department. Obviously the biggest event was that yesterday we started a Kindle Fire Case Giveaway, which already has about 1400 entries. If you haven't entered yet, don't miss your chance to! The giveaway will end next Monday.

In other news, we talked a bit about What People Use the Fire for, and the polls there are still going. Some people might even be using their Fire to Do Taxes this year, thanks to a few free apps. Our post on App Permissions was a popular one. Definitely good to be aware of what you're letting them do when you install them. And we started the week off with discussion about the future of publishing and the "war" between Amazon and Apple. And we'll have lots more coming your way this week too!

New Update Adds Notifications to textPlus
Being able to text on the Fire is one of the best things about it, but the lack of notifications meant you would have to stop whatever you were doing to check and see if a text came in. Fortunately, a new update has fixed that oversight, and you should be able to easily receive the alert and reply without having the app open. If you already have the app, hit sync and the down arrow to get the update.

Name: textPlus Free
Rating: 3.7 stars over 358 reviews
Price: 0.00
Description: Text anyone around the world for free. Break free from your mobile carrier's texting limitations and keep an open dialogue with your friends. Sending and receiving text messages using textPlus Free is totally free to you.

The thought of texting for free is liberating, no doubt, but textPlus Free offers much more than savings. This app presents unique texting opportunities, enhancing and expanding text conversations. After registering and getting your free texting phone number, you'll be able to invite multiple friends into existing text conversations, create and join texting communities, meet new friends, and text from anywhere in the world, free of charge.

Though I don't think this could really compare with Plants Vs. Zombies, this next game just might be silly enough to get your attention. What will they think of next, Cheese Wheels Vs. Bacteria?

Slide your finger across the screen, prodding your cows while keeping your eyes peeled for any alien ships. When you spot one trying to sneak in, bump it off the screen ASAP--if a single ship breaches the barn, it's all over.

The better you get in defending your farm, the more Milk Points you can collect. Redeem these for power-ups, boosters, saves, and other extras. There's even a fun Cows vs Aliens ringtone for you to download.

Cold My Heart: Today's Book of the Day 1/29

Fans of historical romance are sure to enjoy today's book of the day from author Sarah Woodbury. Her research and understanding of Welsh history breathes new life into the Arthurian tale and in particular her protagonists, a valiant knight and a former nun who are the key to saving King Arthur's rule. Do yourself a favor and take a step into the past with this novel!

Name: Cold My Heart: A Novel of King Arthur
Rating: 4.8 stars over 4 reviews
Price: 3.99
Description: A tale of timeless love, heroic courage . . . and a race to change the course of destiny itself.  I couldn't put it down.  This is King Arthur as you've never seen him before.  --Anna Elliott, author of the Twilight of Avalon trilogy.

By the autumn of 537 AD, all who are loyal to King Arthur have retreated to a small parcel of land in north Wales. They are surrounded on all sides, heavily outnumbered, and facing near certain defeat.

But Myrddin and Nell, two of the King's companions, have a secret that neither has ever been able to face: each has seen that on a cold and snowy day in December, Saxon soldiers sent by Modred will ambush and kill King Arthur.

And together, they must decide what they are willing to do, and to sacrifice, to avert that fate.

Reviews: "I absolutely loved this unique and very different version of the King Arthur legend. The story is told through the eyes of Myrddin, one of Arthur's knights, and Nell, a young former nun. Both share visions of Arthur's coming death at the battle of Camlann, and unite in a race to change Arthur's destiny and the future of Britain. The story is fast-paced and yet beautifully told, the growing romance between Myrddin and Nell is compelling, and the history of a dark and brutal--and yet heroic--time leaps from the page. Highly recommended."

In Galactic Striker, you're Jack Panic, the world's greatest (and cockiest) astronaut and hero. But during this routine mission, you accidentally damage an alien mothership (oops) and insult their leader (double-oops), who subsequently teleports you to the other side of the galaxy (not cool, bro).

Polls: What Do You Use the Fire for?

We've been looking at some data released recently about how people use their Fire, and we decided that we wanted to do some polling of our own. It's always interesting to think about how people are using their devices and to reflect on our own usage. The Fire lets us do so many things, but what do we use it for the most?

We'd also like to ask some questions about The Kindle Fire Department. We've been phenomenally lucky to have grown so big so fast, but we'd like to know more about what you want from us and what we can do for you. Whether in the polls ahead or the comments below, we'd love to hear about what you get out of our site, in the hopes that we can continue to mold and improve our content in order to best suit you.

Let's ask your opinion and then check out some of the data from this poll of 216 Fire owners (not that many).

What is the #1 thing people do with their Fires?
And now we ask you:

What Do You Do the Most on Your Fire?

Now let's look at what made you want the Fire in the first place.

What Did You Want Most About the Fire?

Now we'll ask a few questions about our site, if you don't mind. Feel free to explain your thoughts in the comments!

What Are You Most Interested in at the Fire Dept?

And the next question about the apps, books, accessories, and other products we display!

How Often Do You Get Things Featured Here?

And finally, we've love to hear your thoughts on how we can improve our site. How can we encourage you to visit more often, make our content more appealing to you, and provide a better experience for you with your Fire?

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, and we appreciate everyone for making us their destination for Fire-related entertainment!
