Free Apps: AccuWeather, Dolphin Browser, and imo instant messenger

Presenting a few great, free apps for the Kindle Fire! Apps are like books: you can never have too many. And these will prove very useful and affordable. I think tomorrow I'll catalog the five most popular apps of the week!

Name: Dolphin Browser Mini [Edit: Must be side-loaded to use on Kindle Fire]
Rating: 4.6 stars over 29 reviews
Price: 0.00
Description: Looking to put your Android Web-browsing experience on turbo? Then put that clunky stock browser aside and surf with the Dolphin Browser Mini. This browser is a lightweight version of the popular Dolphin Browser HD. This streamlined app is designed to run on Android OS 1.6 and up, but the Mini still has many of the great features of its big brother. If you're looking for pure speed, the Mini is the way to go.

I keep hearing amazing things about this little browser, an alternative to the built-in Silk browser provided by Amazon. It's fast. easy to use, and has a number of nice features like the ability to take screenshots. Could be a useful back-up you might need at some point.

  1. You might mention that the free apps can be downloaded while the person waits for the delivery of the fire. The app store will download it as soon as they register. If they already have Android, those apps from amazon app store will also download. This was news to me when I registered my Fire.

  2. Absolutely, Melissa. Very good point. We actually have an earlier post on that very topic:

    Thanks for visiting!

  3. You're aware the the dolphin browsers aren't allowed to be installed on the Fire, right?

  4. Thanks for your post, double. Amazon sure seems to make it hard to get the browser on a Fire, preventing a direct download, but Dolphin can be installed by side-loading, which Amazon fully allows. A note about this will be edited into the main post.

  5. I found the full Dolphin HD browswer on getjar and it loaded and installed and ran just fine. No sideloading required. Would love to know where I could get all the neat addons they have listed, but the browser keeps looking for them in the Amazon App Store (and googling them did not help). My only quibble with the Dolphin browser is the Share feature is weak; the Silk browser will let you share a webpage link via hootsuite, email, or other ways. I wanted to tweet a particular page link and post it on facebook; this did not work in the Dolphin browser and did in the Silk browser. So, you may not want to set this up as your default browser if you do any serious page sharing. If you have already done so, you will need an app task killer to stop it running so you can use the Silk browser and reset it as the default. I did that and now it offers me the choice between the 2 browsers whenever I press a link.
